Storyline

“Sweet Judy Blue Eyes” takes place in a New York City bar with six world trade center employees on September 10th, 2001. The story begins as Michael (25) enters the bar alone, after leaving directly from work. He quickly orders two drinks and settles into a package of cigarettes. He anxiously awaits his friends who are bringing him a blind date.

Kevin and Penny (29) arrive first. They are Michael's only friends that are happily married and are expecting a baby within the month. Michael is confronted by Kevin about his cocaine addiction and his self created phobia of meeting new women. Before the argument can come to a close the rest of the group arrives. Mark (30) and Natasha (29) arrive with Michael's blind date Judy (26). Mark and Natasha have been married for a few years. Mark is a gambling junkie with a good salary. Natasha has grown cold and distant due to having to deal with her husband's excuses for so long. What Natasha doesn't know is that Mark has closed a deal at work that will bring a lot of financial security to the relationship. Natasha has yet to tell Mark that she has discovered that she was pregnant. Their plans to share their secrets are spoiled due to Natasha finding a casino receipt in Mark’s wallet. Michael's first attempts to approach Judy are ruined due to her cell phone and the fact that he takes on a passive-aggressive tone about her being a workaholic.

The group splits up for a while around the bar. Natasha confronts Mark about the casino receipt and then joins Penny to discuss how she should break the news to her husband about their pregnancy. Mark and Kevin sit at the bar and talk about how Mark should tell Natasha about his newfound fortune. Michael retreats to the restroom after being caught staring at Judy. In the restroom, Michael sits in front of two lines of cocaine and makes a choice not to do them. He returns to the table with newfound self confidence and asks Judy out on a date. Judy happily agrees and the group finishes their night of drinking in better spirits. Michael decides to stay for one more drink after everyone has left the bar and happily basks in the light of making his first good choices in a while.

Judy is amused by Michael's anxiousness.

The next morning, Penny awakes at approximately 9:40am in her apartment, struggles out of bed and into the kitchen. She switches on the news and proceeds to the calendar to cross off another day on her countdown to her due date. The calendar reveals that it is the morning of September 11th, 2001 and she realizes that all of her friends have already gone to work.

Michael makes his decision to quit.
