FULL SYNOPSIS Beth pins on her mother’s antique brooch, remembering time gone by. Although her mother, Blanche, has not spoken in six months, Beth visits her every week in the Alzheimer’s Unit. Today is Blanche’s 71st birthday. As Beth walks down the hospital hall with a cake, she is reminded of last years’s party when her mother was vibrant and full of life. Beth gives Blanche a carousel horse figurine, and Blanche remembers going to a carousel with her mother as a child. Beth tends to Blanche and rubs on hand cream, combs her hair, and puts on lipstick before the family arrives. The family visits Blanche, but she is unaware. Attempting to get Blanche to respond, Beth places the antique brooch in Blanche’s hand. Blanche drops the brooch. Inside her mind she is a child again at a tea party with her mother, spinning in the sunlight of a grassy field, and riding the carousel with her mother. The family leaves and Beth sits on the bed to pin on the brooch. As Beth pins on the brooch Blanche sings a nursery rhyme. Beth becomes overjoyed that her mother is speaking, but quickly realizes her mother is not talking to her. Blanche is a child again; playing with her mother in a field of daisies, swinging from a rope swing, doing ballet for her mother, and frolicking through trees with a balloon. With her back to her mother, Beth holds back the tears. Beth quickly turns and tells her mother goodbye. Blanche, in a moment of clarity, calls out, “Beth?” Beth comes running into the room only to find her mother blankly gazing out the window. Beth is devastated and cries in her mother’s lap.
